What it is & how it works

A ServiceNow Personal Developer Instance, or PDI, is a free, full-featured ServiceNow instance handed out through the ServiceNow Developer Program. You request one, get admin access, and use it to build applications or learn the platform. Enterprises separately run sub-production sandbox instances alongside their paid subscription for change testing. The PDI is aimed at individual developers and learners who want a real instance without buying a sub-production environment first.

Setup, limits & watch-outs

The catch is reclamation. Leave a PDI idle for too long and ServiceNow takes it back, so you need to log in and keep it active, or wake and reactivate it before you can resume. It is not meant for production or real data. If you are building something an enterprise will actually run, plan to move the work into a proper sub-production sandbox and then production, rather than treating the free PDI as a permanent home.
