Plaid Sandbox

What it is & how it works

Plaid Sandbox is a free environment that runs on mock financial data rather than real bank connections. You get unlimited test Items and can set up customizable test scenarios, so you can build and exercise Plaid flows before requesting access to real data. Plaid runs it, and it sits at the start of the path that leads to Production, where your integration connects to actual financial institutions and live customer accounts.

Setup, limits & watch-outs

Watch the environment history. Plaid decommissioned its separate Development environment in June 2024, so many tutorials still reference an environment that no longer exists, which trips up anyone following an old sandbox-versus-development-versus-production guide. Sandbox is mock data only, so it will not surface every quirk of a real institution. Trial and Limited Production give free ways to test against real data, so use those to validate before you move fully to Production.
